Business Loans & Turnaround Finance in Swansea
Turnaround finance for Swansea businesses that mainstream lenders will not touch: refinancing unaffordable debt, releasing cash from assets and invoices, and bridging the gap while the business recovers. K2 has done this for UK companies since 1990, and can put in its own money where it sees a future.
Finance for Swansea businesses under pressure
Swansea businesses that ask us about loans have usually already tried the bank. We work from our Bristol & Bath office, about 70 miles away, and the first conversation is free and confidential: we will tell you whether new money will help, or make things worse.
Swansea grew as a centre for copper smelting and metals but is now a service-sector economy, acting as the commercial and public-service centre for South West Wales. Large employers include the DVLA headquarters at Morriston, Admiral Group, the Swansea Bay University Health Board, HSBC, BT and several contact centres, and Swansea University's Bay Campus supports research and innovation.
Is borrowing paying for last month?
A lot of small companies are paying staff, suppliers and tax out of borrowed money, and next month they have to borrow more to do it again. Another loan does not fix that: it buys time and adds a repayment. Before you borrow, find out whether the business makes money at its current size and structure. If it does not, the plan has to change first, and that is the conversation we have with directors every week.
Use our business loan calculator to see what a repayment really costs the business each month, then read what to do when business loans become unaffordable.
Turnaround finance options in Swansea
For a business in Swansea under pressure, the cheapest money is usually the money it does not have to borrow, and the most expensive is the loan taken in a hurry. This is the order in which we work through the options:
HMRC Time to Pay
Often the cheapest money a struggling business can find: spreading tax arrears over months instead of borrowing to pay them. HMRC wants a credible plan. How to deal with HMRC debt.
Restructure existing loans
A longer term, a capital holiday or interest-only period can do more for cash flow than a new facility. Lenders negotiate when they see a forecast and a plan.
Asset-based lending
Borrowing secured against debtors, stock, plant or property. Generally the cheapest turnaround finance where the assets exist.
Invoice finance
Releases cash tied up in unpaid customer invoices, useful where the debtor book is strong and customers pay reliably.
Secondary and bridging lenders
Specialist lenders that accept higher risk at a higher price. A bridge to refinancing, not a permanent answer. Secondary business lenders explained.
Equity partnership with K2
K2 invests its time and expertise for a minority equity interest or success fee, and any cash we put in is always as a loan. We only do it where we believe in the recovery. Our investment process.
The Growth Guarantee Scheme
The government's Growth Guarantee Scheme, run by the British Business Bank, gives participating lenders a 70% guarantee on term loans, overdrafts, asset finance, invoice finance and asset-based lending of up to £2m, and is open until March 2030. The business stays liable for 100% of the debt and must be viable: a company already in formal insolvency is not eligible. Lenders can still ask for a personal guarantee, but cannot take your main home as security. Scheme details on GOV.UK.
Public business finance for Swansea
Government-backed funds lend to and invest in businesses in Wales. They are designed for viable businesses with a plan, so they suit a company that has stabilised, not one that is still losing cash:
Development Bank of Wales · £1k–£10m loans
Owned by the Welsh Government, it lends from £1k to £10m over terms of up to 15 years, including through the £500m Wales Flexible Investment Fund (£25k–£10m loan, mezzanine and equity deals) and a Micro Loan Fund for loans up to £100k.
Wales Business Succession Fund · £500k–£5m
Blended equity and loans from the Development Bank of Wales to support management buy-outs and changes of ownership, which are often part of a turnaround.
Financial distress in Swansea: the data
K2 tracks every corporate insolvency notice published in The London Gazette and matches it to the company's Companies House record and last filed accounts. These figures cover companies with a registered office in Swansea (the SA postcode area) on our record since July 2026, excluding solvent members' voluntary liquidations. They count notices, not companies: one insolvency usually produces several notices.

Debt is part of the story: 3% of the Swansea companies that reached the Gazette had a registered charge, meaning a lender held security over the business. Secured lenders are usually first in line in an insolvency, which is why the terms of any new borrowing, and any personal guarantee behind it, matter so much.

Before you apply: what a lender will want to see
Lenders to a business in difficulty are not lending against last year's accounts. They are lending against a plan, and they will test it. Having this ready changes the conversation:
A 13-week cash flow forecast
Week by week, showing the low point and how the new money gets through it and is repaid.
Current management accounts
Recent, accurate and reconciled, with aged debtor and creditor lists.
The HMRC position
What is owed, whether a Time to Pay arrangement is in place, and whether it is being kept.
A turnaround plan
What has gone wrong, what is changing, and why the business will make money after the change.
Security and guarantees
What assets are already charged, and what personal guarantees the directors have already given.
Who else is owed
Existing lenders, asset finance and landlords, and whether any are already taking action.
This is the work K2 does in an Options Review: the document directors take to their bank, HMRC, investors and creditors. For the wider market, including typical costs, read our turnaround finance guide and bank lending guide.

Business loans in Swansea: frequently asked questions
Is K2 a lender or a loan broker?
Neither. K2 is a turnaround investor. We help directors work out how much finance the business can genuinely support, prepare the case lenders need to see and introduce specialist funders. Where we become partners in a business we may lend to it ourselves, always as a loan alongside our equity stake.
Can a business in Swansea get a loan with HMRC arrears?
Sometimes, but most lenders will want to see a Time to Pay arrangement agreed with HMRC first, and a cash flow forecast showing it can be kept. Asset-based lenders and invoice finance providers are often more flexible than banks because they lend against specific assets. See how to deal with HMRC debt.
Will a lender want a personal guarantee?
Most lenders to small and medium-sized companies ask for one, and it puts your personal assets behind the company's debt. Even on loans under the government's Growth Guarantee Scheme a lender can ask for a personal guarantee, although it cannot take your main home as security for it. Read personal guarantees on business loans before you sign one.
What if our existing loans have become unaffordable?
Talk to the lender before you miss a payment, with a forecast and a proposal: a payment holiday, a longer term or interest-only for a period. If the business has several lenders, or HMRC and suppliers are also owed, a wider restructuring such as a CVA may be needed. See unaffordable business loans.
How quickly can turnaround finance be arranged?
Invoice finance and asset-based lending can sometimes be in place within two to four weeks if the paperwork is ready. Restructuring existing debt or bringing in an equity partner usually takes longer. The sooner you start, the more options you have.
Is there a government-backed business loan fund for Swansea?
Yes. Businesses in Wales can apply to the Development Bank of Wales (£1k–£10m loans) and the Wales Business Succession Fund (£500k–£5m). These funds lend to viable businesses with a plan, so they suit a company that has stabilised rather than one still losing cash. The national Growth Guarantee Scheme is also available through participating lenders.
