Would your business thrive using a four-day week?

Or would it be impossible?

As part of its package of proposed reforms for workers the Labour government has promised to introduce a four-day week for workers.

This would come in the form of “compressed hours” where an employee is allowed to work their regular hours over four days instead of five, according to reports.

The law would see this change, with all employers needing to offer flexible working from day one, except where it is “not reasonably feasible”.

It is argued that the measure “could be transformative for staff as well as the economy”.

Trials already carried out by some companies have shown it can boost productivity, creating a more focused and energised workforce.

But there are some doubters among employers who argue that it could be an unhealthy mentality where employees feel pressure to be “always on” for days where they are working.

Among the big companies that have scrapped the idea after trials are Asda, Morrisons and Domestic & General (D&G), where staff have complained the new shift patterns were physically demanding”, left them exhausted on their day off and created “difficulties with school pick-ups”.

André Spicer, a professor at Bayes Business School, says staff must “accept longer working days as a trade-off” if they shift to compressed hours. But demanding bosses could use a compressed week to make staff feel like they can never say no to requests.

So what are the pros and cons?

According to the British Business Bank the four-day week can boost recruitment, increase productivity, reduce costs, improve employee well-being and have a positive environmental impact.

On the other hand, its research also shows that having a four-day week may not suit all businesses.  Examples include hospitality, nursing and transport businesses. It can also increase costs for some businesses and can reduce productivity and also job satisfaction.

While there are signs of improvement in the economy since the election with reports that the manufacturing sector in particular has surged, care will have to be taken in the introduction of this legislation to ensure the improvement continues.
